This lightweight, elegant scarf is a whole-hearted celebration of autumn colour. The hand-painted border in the colours of autumn foliage and the pattern echoing the tapered shape of birch leaves – one of the loveliest trees in Scotland at any season – are set off by the muted warmth of olive green. This is a bold statement scarf for an outfit that won’t be overlooked.
The hand-painted border is a blend of Merino and silk, while the rest of the yarns blend Merino, silk and yak. The warp has been dyed with weld and hand-painted with weld, madder and pomegranate. The weft yarn is dyed with walnut.
Every scarf in the Seasons collection is individually woven in a unique combination of hand-dyed yarns. There will never be another scarf like yours.
This scarf is 17 cm wide x 166 cm long (or approximately 6.5 x 65 inches). The fringe adds approx 10 cm (4 inches) at each end.

Thanks to an award from VACMA Dundee, I spent time in 2019 exploring the possibilities of painting warps using natural dyes. This collection brings together several of the techniques I have developed. The inspiration then followed in October when I had the opportunity to visit Nova Scotia for a short residency. The timing could not have been better for autumn colour and I soaked it up eagerly! As soon as I got home I resolved to begin a new series of scarves celebrating the seasons and to start with autumn foliage. You can see some of the inspiration and work in progress in this blog post.
This collection is exclusively available direct from Bonny Claith. You will find it online or at selected events, but not in any shops or galleries.
